Having a functional residential mailbox is a must for every home that wishes to receive mail. Upgrading your residential mailbox today can also immediately upgrade your curb appeal.

While a residential mailbox is not a legal requirement it is a great way to add to your curb appeal and the architecture of your home and let visitors know where you live. Having a full-featured mailbox can also help keep your packages and mail safe while also helping prevent identity theft.

Finding the perfect residential mailbox for your home may seem like a daunting task but with our wide selection of residential mailboxes, we are sure you will find a model that suits your needs.

See the most common types of residential mailbox styles below to find the right mailbox for your project.

Common Types of Residential Mailboxes

Post Mounted / Curbside Mailboxes

A post mount mailbox is typically found in suburban and rural homes where mail is delivered by vehicle. There are strict regulations regarding the height of the mailbox and distance from the street ensuring the postperson can easily deliver the mail without leaving their vehicle.

The post mount mailbox is the most common with many different styles available from leading brands. For decorative mailboxes, we recommend Whitehall Products Custom Mailboxes and for contemporary locking security mailboxes, Mailboss is our go-to.

Wall Mount Mailboxes

Wall mount mailboxes can be found in the city and urban areas where mail is delivered on foot. They can be mounted to fences, walls, and building exteriors, generally near the front door of your home.

If you currently have a post mount mailbox and wish to change it to a wall mount mailbox you must get prior approval from your local postmaster. If the change is made without approval the USPS may stop mail delivery.

Mail Slot

Mail Slots allow mail to be delivered directly into your home. They can be used as a wall mailbox replacement but are generally only suitable for mail and will not accept packages of any sort.

Column Mount

Column-mounted mailboxes don't necessarily need to be a specialized mailbox. Many of our customers have successfully used post-mounted mailboxes and designed their columns around them. Columns are often made from stone and brick but stucco columns are also available for those seeking a less DIY style project.

Criteria for Finding the Right Mailbox

Material & Durability

Since residential mailboxes are generally exposed to the elements such as sun, snow, and salt spray from the road in the winter material selection is important. Common material options include steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and plastic.

If your area is prone to harsh weather conditions galvanized steel, rust-resistant aluminum, stainless steel, or leakproof molded plastic are great options. Using vandal-proof steel also adds additional security by keeping your mail safe and protected.

Size

With the dawn of online shopping and Amazon, the ability to accept packages has become an important consideration when selecting your new mailbox. Many older mailboxes can barely hold a single small package resulting in mail being left on the ground exposed to the elements and vulnerable to theft.

New next-generation mailboxes should be at least 16..3" Wide x 12" Tall x 16.9" Deep.

When selecting your new mailbox consider how many packages, excluding those delivered by FedEx, UPS, or other 3rd party delivery services your household receives.

Location

If you're located in a suburban neighborhood post mount and column-mount mailboxes may be the best fit. However, if you live in the city, wall mount and mail slots will be the mailboxes you want to purchase.

Style

Your residential mailbox style should match your home and add to its curb appeal. We offer a wide variety of styles including contemporary, modern, rustic, classic, and historical. Most of your residential mailboxes come in a variety of colors, the most common being black, bronze, white, green, and grey.

Our mailboxes also come with matching post options designed to further complement any mailbox you select.

Personalization

Customize your mailbox by adding your street name and street number or only your street number. Some models offer additional custom features such as personalized door plaques and custom monograms.

At our store, we offer a wide variety and styles to choose from. If you can't find what you're looking for, feel free to reach out to us and one of our friendly customer support staff will be happy to help your find what you're looking for.

Security

With mail theft and identity theft on the rise, you may want to opt for a mailbox with additional security features. These mailboxes are usually made from vandal-proof material such as stainless steel, galvanneal, or galvanized steel helping to provide additional security.

A locking mailbox is the best choice when security is a top priority. Locking Mailboxes feature a secure compartment that can only be accessed via key keeping your sensitive information and valuable deliveries safe.

Residential Mailbox FAQ

Explore some of the common questions that our customers have asked us in the past. If it's not covered here, feel free to reach out to us and we will be happy to help.

Are your mailboxes USPS approved?

Yes, most of our mailbox models are USPS-approved (USPS standard 7c) and this is highlighted in the individual description. Some models however can be customized in such a way that they no longer adhere to USPS regulations.

Do you legally have to have a mailbox?

No, you do not legally have to have a mailbox. If you do not have either a mailbox or a PO box at your local post office you will not be able to receive any mail.

Any mail that you do receive will automatically be returned to the sender marked "NMR", or "No Mail Receptacle".

Can I change my Mailbox Location?

Yes, but only with prior approval from your local postmaster. If you do not get prior approval and opt to change your mailbox location without getting prior approval mail delivery may be halted.

What is the shipping Cost?

While many of our mailboxes come with Free Shipping, some of the larger models in our store have an additional shipping fee. This price is calculated during checkout using the delivery address.
